Endloop is proud to announce iMockups, a gorgeous, rapid wireframing and layout app designed exclusively for the iPad.

Sorry we didn’t have a chance to properly blog about this but we’ve been coding like madmen for awhile now.

A full blog post is forthcoming but in the meantime, check out our preview video of iMockups

    Just curious. Did the guys from Balsamiq hire you to port their app (Balsamiq Mockups) to the iPad and use their graphics? I’m assuming yes since it’s practically the same product name and UI elements.

  2. March 29th, 2010 at 02:13 | #2

    We definitely love Balsamiq’s product but we aimed to create something that took advantage of the iPad’s form factor and multitouch capabilities. Have you checked out MockFlow? I believe there’s room for innovation and we’re trying our best to do that.

  3. March 29th, 2010 at 02:32 | #3

    Very cool. I’m looking forward to trying out all kinds of great iPad apps that will help me in my UX Design work. It’s hard to believe that there are some people that just think the iPad is a bigger version of the iPhone. I certainly would never think of creating mockups on any mobile phone just because of the screen size.

    Looks ideal for several purposes at work. Cost?

  5. March 29th, 2010 at 09:56 | #5

    What about interoperation with the desktop, for those unfortunate enough not to have an iPad?

  6. March 29th, 2010 at 14:39 | #6

    @Erlend we’re aiming for $9.99 at launch. :)

    now - please give us a basic uml modeller someone - and we can do much of the applicationdesign with touch - both UI-wise and Class-wise :-)

  12. March 30th, 2010 at 16:51 | #12

    Love the app …

  13. April 2nd, 2010 at 02:41 | #13

    hey, does this allow for all the cool drop-down menus and other non-iphone specific interface elements? i’d assume so. this is definitely on my list of must buy iphone apps (i actually made the list just because of your app), because i am buying an ipad for the explicit purpose of programming an ipad. i am in charge of interface design, so it is great that i can use the ipad to design the interface! i also am salivating thinking of all sorts of things i can mock up. thanks for your hard work!

  14. April 2nd, 2010 at 02:49 | #14

    Thanks for your comments everyone, we’re happy we’ve made something that so many people are excited for! We’re still charting the product plan for iMockups and right now we’re real busy on putting together the first update after launch. Lots of great features to come and we’ll definitely keep your suggestions in mind as we plan the growth of iMockups.

    @David Boveri yes there is a UI control for the iPad ‘popover’ menu available in iMockups at launch :)

    @ken
    This is fantastic, excellent work. WIll iMockup be able to export to and import from Balsamiq Mockups?

  16. Chris Minshall
    April 3rd, 2010 at 15:20 | #16

    Ok, bought the app and it looks promising - but, where is the color? I was concerned it was black and white only when I saw the video and now it appears I was correct? Will this be corrected in the next release?

  17. April 3rd, 2010 at 18:43 | #17

    @Chris Minshall

    Yes, color borders and color backgrounds are being worked on for a future update. Not for the very 1st update as we’re fixing some bugs and want to get that out as soon as possible.

  18. April 5th, 2010 at 09:05 | #18

    Balsamiq support please! Either that, MockFlow or your own Desktop client. I see you’re planning an update to support exporting as pdf or XML - this is great, but I’m more concerned with being able to take the mockups created on iPad, have them worked on by someone who doesn’t have access to an iPad and vice versa. This would be killer!

    What is needed is “MockupML” so that those who develop with these tools can transfer to other tools easily. Of course it may be that there will be items that don’t transfer but the core will be supported. The visual look of a window might change, but the data will be shareable. IT is also possible to allow custom extensions in a standard so that “round tripping” is possible for any application.

    MockupML would grow the market - I hope that the competitors can work to make this happen, perhaps with an intermediary to moderate.

  20. April 6th, 2010 at 10:17 | #20

    We’re exploring making an online solution for viewing/collaborating on mockups but in the until that’s underway, we’re going to make an iPad to iPad transfer option so 2 iMockups can transmit to each other.

    MockupML is an interesting idea but there’s quite a few competitors out there, I’m not sure how likely it would be to get everyone on board.

    Thanks for the feedback!

    Our new update is under review, check here for patch notes: http://blog.endloop.ca/blog/2010/04/04/imockups-first-update-resubmitted-fixed-crash-bugs-please-read/

    Any thoughts to creating ‘toolkits’ that could have various graphic pallets that could be selected based on what you’re developing for? I don’t do web or iPhone/iPad development, but I do develop in FileMaker. I’ve downloaded and I’m going to give it a try but it would be nice if user’s could either develop their own graphic objects, or better still if the app came with different pallets that could be selected for each project. For example this project is for an iPhone app, so I use the iPhone pallet. This other project is for a FileMaker app so I will use the FileMaker pallet.

  23. April 6th, 2010 at 15:38 | #23

    @Steve Smith

    We’re planning on separating the UI controls into distinct categories and we’re going to build in more ‘generic’ controls so they will support more multi-purpose usage.

    Make sure to download the latest update v1.01 which should be up in a little while since it fixes a lot of the bugs in the launch version.

    Any chance you guys would do a web app or desktop app. Or could you recommend one that would be the equivalent of your iPad app on web/desktop? I know your iPad app is the best in its class but I don’t see myself or my colleagues having one within the next couple of years. Good luck.

  25. April 27th, 2010 at 11:09 | #25

    The iPad is the perfect platform for this app. I agree with you Ken. There is plenty of room for innovation in this area and you guys are doing exactly that. Great job! Thanks for the latest iPad update, really nice. Keep it up.

    May 13th, 2010 at 22:53 | #26

    In the same way of Steve’s suggestion (April 6th), that would be nice to have a graphic pallet based on the platform. For example, I would be interested to have the layout and controls for Microsoft Dynamics CRM (xRM). I know I can probably do a generic mockup that would represent the idea, but if the controls, the layout and the colors were similar to the real thing, that would be very interesting. Thanks.

    Man that looks like a nice app. To bad the iPad isn’t remotely in the budget.

    Any word a of OSX version? (I know that might be too much to ask. . .)

    Hi, I just got my iPad at the Apple store, and the first app I loaded on it was iMockups. Thank you for making such a brilliant, intuitive product that makes laying out wireframes such a breeze. You guys are awesome!

    June 19th, 2010 at 14:25 | #31

    This looks great, I only have one question before i buy it. Can you export your mockups? Perhaps save as a PDF or a flat image that can be emailed to a client?

  32. July 6th, 2010 at 20:17 | #32

    Addendum to previous bug report :
    Image import failure only applies to image elements in old mockups ( I.e. Those created with the old app version). Creating a new image element or cloning an old one works as advertised.
    Suggestion : at the moment, the source image stretches to fit the image element bounds. It might be useful to have the image maintain its aspect ratio and clip itself so it fills the image element without stretching.
    Suggestion 2 : when you hit the import image button, recall which image album we were last selected an image from, and start in that album. If you want to add multiple images from the same album, this would save lots of time.
    Thanks for listening !

    Looks great, but you need a translator asap. The german language description in the AppStore is very bad and wrong and sounds funny at best. :) Drop me a note if you need help, it’s not that much text, after all.

    @xian

    Hi Xian,

    We definitely have plans to add more iphone interface elements in a future update. We will try our best to get them out as soon as we can.

    That’s awesome to hear that you are loving iMockups! :) Thank you for your support. We really appreciate it.

    Hello, first I want to thank you for an already great app that really boosts the usefullness of my iPad. I would really appreciate
    - more standard shapes like horizontal and vertical lines
    - a browser-shape that reflects the toolbar-stuffed reality (less usable space)
    - a stencil Import like omni graffle would be just great (or any other way to add new and/or custom shapes)
    - IMPORTANT: Make use of the VGA Adapter so that we can work together and use a projector. This is really killing me at the moment, because I am pretty much limited to use iMockup just for my rough ideas … no way using it with clients. So I have to change to a desktop Applikation …
    - Support of the workflow like adding notes and comments to pages an objects.
    - It would be very helpful if several objects could be coloured … e.g. to mark them as “to be delivered”

    Are you planning an update already and what will be key features?

    Chaot

  37. July 19th, 2010 at 17:44 | #37

    @chaot

    Hi Chaot,

    Thank you for your suggestions. We love hearing them as it helps to point us in the right direction.

    Our latest version will include some of the features you have requested. We plan to submit an update today and hope to release v1.08 as soon as it is approved. :)

    Version 1.08 will include more shapes, lines, arrows, sticky note and mark-up elements. We are doing our best to add more and more elements as we release our updates. You will also have the ability to import your own stencils with the image import via the photo library as iMockups will support images with transparency. Grouping elements and the ability to cut, copy and paste across all projects are a couple of other key features in v1.08.

    By toolbar-stuffed reality, I am assuming you are referring to the white space in the browser in which you can resize to remove the white space. Let me know if I am misunderstanding this.

    We are currently working on supporting the VGA adaptor and the ability to change the foreground and background colour of elements for a later update.

    We thank you for your patience and are happy to hear that you finding iMockups useful. We hope you enjoy the new version.

    Feel free to drop us a line if you have any further questions or suggestions.

    Thanks again,

    Hi Linda,

    thank you for your immediate response. 1.08 sounds good! With “toolbar stuffed” I was pointing to the usable white space inside the browser which actually has a big impact on the screen design if you are developing for 1024*768 etc. In this case I would prefer to get a better idea of how many elements are really visible without scrolling.
    As I wrote … support if the VGA-Adapter is the key feature I am (and everybody I know with an iPad) that I am missing. And your app is already so good that it is able to be used instead of “grown” desktop apps.

    Thank you

    Chaot

    How do you get an actual image into the image stencil?

  40. July 26th, 2010 at 00:56 | #40

    @Help

    Hi, just double-tap the image object (or tap Info from the quick menu after you’ve selected an image object). From the properties popover, tap Import Image.

    Be sure you’ve sized the image object to your needs before you import as that will affect the scale of the picture being imported.

    Hope that helps :)

    Hi

    Great app - and one that I will be using to develop apps with my clients. Hit one issue when importing image graphic - I get a thin white band around the top and right hand edge of the graphic when I load it into the image cell. Tried the same action using Keynote and it is not there (so probably not the graphic element. I am basically wanting to load graphics of all iPhone elements onto my iPad and then, if you dont have the element in you list, I can simply create the element using an image graphic dropped into an image cell….. Can you look at this for me please and see why it is happening/how to correct it.

    Thanks

  42. August 1st, 2010 at 15:01 | #42

    Hi Ross,

    Thank you for informing us of this issue.

    We can’t seem to replicate it and would like to know if this is happening to all of your images or only specific ones?

    Good idea on your end in importing your own elements into iMockups!

    We will continue to look into this until we can find what is causing the white banding.

    We appreciate your help.

    Hi Linda

    I think that it may have been how I copied and pasted the element… I have managed to do it without the white line - I will try and replicate it again and let you know - if I do - maybe I can email a copy to you…?
