Hello world! Again!

September 29th, 2008 garry 4 comments

Just moved and trying to set up everything again.  Going for a fresh start in more ways than one.

I’ll set the scene with a brief run down of what’s happened.

1) I went to MeshU in Toronto and discovered that there were so many people, like Ryan Carson, who were way more ambitious and successful than I ever was.  This was inspirational but at the same time slightly depressing.  I had thought that I was doing pretty well for myself with my well-paying, cushy, software development manager role in my pseudo-government company.  My career was progressing well, but my heart just wasn’t in it.

2) I went to DemoCamp and saw even more ambitious people.  Then Jevon MacDonald spoke and really hit a chord with me.  What the hell am I doing in this 9-5 grind of a job??

3) Finally, as Gordon Ramsay would say, the goddamn penny dropped.  I resigned from my manager position and decided that I was going to build all those “great” ideas that I’ve been going on and on about.  Time to see if I can actually do something about all this passion.

So now, here I am.  Not quite unemployed yet (I gave my boss a generous 6 weeks notice), but I’m counting down the days.  I won’t really be able to survive without some sort of income so I’m still looking for a part-time consulting gig somewhere.  My fiance can handle most of the financial burden for now, but that won’t last very long if I don’t find a contract or start building something quick.

So the first step was to move to HostingRails.com so that I can use this site not only to host my blog, but also to host my web app as I develop it.  So far so good with the new host.  Release early, release often, right?   That’s what will be going on here as I start to build it up.
